Homeless and housing charity the Whitechapel Centre receives £8,145 from The Deposit Protection Service

Homelessness has never been more prevalent. An estimated 4,751 people slept on the streets overnight in 2017 – a 15% increase on 2016.[1] The definition of “homeless” however is more than just sleeping on the street. If you’re staying with friends, sofa surfing, staying in a hostel or squatting – then you can technically be classed as homeless. It can even include staying in a very crowded and run down property. 

The current financial and housing market makes it harder than ever to live comfortably and affordably in your own home. In light of this, we at The DPS understand that charitable donations and giving back to the community helps keep people off the streets.

Our latest donation was a sum of £8,145 to Liverpool based homeless and housing charity, the Whitechapel Centre. The charity works with people who are sleeping rough, living in hostels or struggling to manage their accommodation in the Liverpool region, helping them to find and maintain a home and learn the life skills essential for independent living.

The centre relies on a combination of local government, charitable trusts, corporate and individual donations. Due to an increasing number of people coming to them for help, they received 27% more applications for help last year. Furthermore – with funding from local government being reduced, we understood they needed more help than ever to ensure they can continue their incredible work.

The Whitechapel Centre’s Hub & Homeless Resolution Service works to ensure no new rough sleeper spends a second night out on the street. 

Rob Farnos, Services Manager at the Whitechapel Centre, said:

“We’re grateful to The DPS for this donation, which will fund our Private Rented Bond Scheme and help those in need to secure a home in private rented accommodation. With the support of organisations like The DPS, we’re able to continue our work supporting homeless and vulnerably housed people in the region into suitable homes.”

Last year the centre found accommodation for 1,354 people & prevented 968 people from becoming homeless.

Major step forward for CINTRE Reachout SouthWest following a DPS Charity Fund donation

It’s been over a year since The DPS Charity Fund awarded £5,000 to CINTRE Reachout South West, helping people with a range of learning difficulties to live independently in their own homes.



We were delighted to support an initiative aiming to allow people to develop and retain their independence in a supportive environment. Let’s catch up with them and see how the donation helped.

Neil Baker from CINTRE explains:

“We aimed for the £5,000 donation to allow us to secure a long term let on a 3 bedroom property for a minimum of 6 months, which would benefit 3 service users at any one time.  It’s very difficult to secure accommodation for our client group, despite having the funds available to guarantee deposits, rents and maintenance. So while we  originally thought about applying for £5k to obtain a 3-bed property on a long-term let, we struggled to find any agents or landlords willing to work with us. Consequently, we decided to ask for £5k towards something far more long lasting and sustainable.”

“In January 2016 CINTRE took a major step forward in its ambitions by making a significant investment in the purchase of a 5 bedroom family home in Bristol for the sole purpose of providing a supported living service to those young people in CINTRE’s target group. The service will be called CINTRE ‘In-Via’ which translated means ‘moving on’.”

“The capital purchase would not have been entirely possible without the generous donation of £5,000 from The DPS.”

“Beneficiaries of this service will include young adults in Bristol and South Gloucestershire who wish to live with other like-minded individuals. They would live in an environment that offers light touch support to learn the skills to enable the young person to realise their dreams of ultimately living independently.”

“The property is currently undergoing an extensive refurbishment that started in November 2016 and is due to be completed by the end of April 2017.”

Well done to all involved at CINTRE for this tremendous achievement, and good luck for the launch of the service.  We look forward to hearing more in the future about how the lives of the residents have changed for the better.

Alexander Road gets a new lease of life with the help of The DPS

At The DPS we’re always excited to hear back from the charities we’ve supported and how the Charity Donations Fund has helped those less fortunate in their community.

So when we caught up with Y Supported Accommodation (YSA), who received an award in 2015 - we were thrilled to hear that our £15,000 donation has allowed them to continue refurbishing their Alexander Road site; a place 20 vulnerable young people can call home, if only for a short period of time.

The refurbishment programme has been extensive, with new boilers, bathrooms, kitchens, flooring, furniture and fire and electrical systems all being fitted, and the feedback has been fantastic…

YSA have found that people will respond positively to a caring, clean and supportive environment. Having pride in their room, appearance and achievements improves their confidence and self-esteem. 

Tom’s story

Tom, a former resident at the Alexander Road showed a remarkable change in his behaviour after being told he may be able to move into a newly renovated flat. 

During his previous stays he was neglectful and damaged the property whilst under the influence of alcohol. But after being given a sneak peek of one the new flats, he began to maintain his current flat to a much higher standard, and more importantly there were no more incidents of vandalism. And after eight weeks, Tom moved into his new place as arranged. 

Tom simply said “it may be homeless accommodation but for me it’s my space and I’ve never had that before especially when everything is new.”

Tom now lives in his own council tenancy, and has been given a lot of practical advice and support by his case worker, including budgeting and paying bills.

Stories like Tom’s are really gratifying to hear, and the reason we started The DPS Fund. We can’t wait to hear more from YSA in the future.

Over 65 homeless people given a warm bed thanks to StopGap and The DPS

Here at The DPS, we love to hear how our Charity Fund donations have helped those less fortunate. We were thrilled when one of our previous award recipients, StopGap, told us that our donation meant over 65 individuals have been given a warm bed and a chance to establish more permanent housing.

Almost two years ago, StopGap Sheffield applied for £5000 to help them extend their reach and make sure more homeless people can escape the threats of violence, hunger, bad weather and health problems that can so often make their lives a misery. StopGap does this by providing an emergency short-term overnight accommodation scheme for those who might otherwise have to sleep rough.

Ruth Grayson from the charity explains how our donation made a difference:

We arrange and pay for bed and breakfast, one night at a time, for clients referred to us by our voluntary sector partner agencies. This (donation) enabled us to provide approximately 140 beds in private B&Bs in the city, benefiting between 65 and 70 individuals. Although the average length of stay is only 2 nights, this gives both client and agency a bit of breathing space and time to seek other solutions.

Ruth was also able to tell us about some of the real people the money benefited. 

Andy was referred to StopGap by one of the nightly soup runs in Sheffield.  He had been sleeping rough in a disused school building for some time. After losing his job, he was thrown out by his partner - who remained in the family home with their children. Andy wanted to stay nearby, so he could see his children on their way to and from school, but without an address of his own, he was forbidden access to them by the courts. After just one night in StopGap accommodation, which gave him a shower and laundry facilities in addition to a good night's sleep and a cooked breakfast, Andy gained the confidence to go and apply to the city council for housing. In due course this was successful and Andy managed to establish his own home and eventually regain regular access to his children. Just one night in safe, warm accommodation made all the difference in his case.

Another client, Brian, who had also lost his job and subsequently fallen into rent arrears, was referred to StopGap by one of the day centres working with homeless people in the city. After a couple of nights in a warm bed, the welfare officer at the centre was able to find him supported accommodation at Emmaus Sheffield where Brian is now said to be doing well. He has regular work and is making friends with some of the other residents.

Christina found herself in a desperate situation when her partner suddenly became very aggressive toward her. She had come with him to England from Bulgaria after he got a UK work permit. Being from Bulgaria, Christina was not able to access public funds and so she was not eligible for help in a refuge for victims of domestic violence. When homelessness seemed like a certainty, StopGap was the only organisation in Sheffield able and willing to keep her safe and off the streets while longer term arrangements could be made.

These are just some of the examples; there are so many other similar cases. The DPS donation has been invaluable, if not an actual life saver, in all these instances.

Congratulations to Back On Track Housing

For the past two years, the DPS Charity Fund has been assisting charities in the housing sector in their aim to fight homelessness and to support those in need of help to live independently. 

This quarter, we were delighted to support Back On Track Housing in their mission to “help rebuild lives” through the development of greater mentoring and training opportunities for clients.

Back On Track Housing works to prevent homelessness, alleviate poverty and provide employment and training to those in need of support.

“We’ve given over £170,000 to housing charities since the launch of our fund, and we’re really happy to be able to assist such crucial work across the country.”

No Limits – Helping young people help themselves

Every three months we award up to £20,000 to charities that focus on housing related issues. Since the launch of our charity fund, we’ve given more than £160,000 to charities doing fantastic work in their local communities. 

In the eighth round of awards, No Limits fought off some stiff competition to claim a donation. We were delighted to hand over a cheque for £5,000 and find out a bit more about their operation on our recent visit.

No Limits

No Limits offers free and confidential advice, information counselling and much more to young people and children who live in Southampton and Hampshire. Some of these children suffer from mental or physical ill-health, which makes the work No Limits do even more challenging. 

Their ‘Floating Support’ and ‘Homemaker Volunteers’ initiatives are fantastic ideas which help those who are at risk of homelessness. But their work doesn’t stop there - they also give people the skills to make their house more of a home.

The donation will go towards Homemaker Volunteer courses, designed to give young people the skills to be independent - such as cooking on a budget, cleaning and money management. 

Natalie Hutchins at No Limits, said: “We’re really grateful to The DPS for the money, which will really help us empower young people to truly enjoy their new homes.

“Some of the young people we work with have never had the welcoming, comfortable home that many of us take for granted, and we want these young people to feel like they have a home of which they can be proud.”

Calderdale SmartMove – helping homeless and vulnerable people find their feet

Through the DPS Fund, every three months £20,000 is awarded to charities that help those who are affected by housing-related issues. 

In our eighth round of awards, the applications were stronger than ever so every detail was taken into consideration.  We’re really pleased to announce that Calderdale Smartmove was one of the successful charities. 

Here’s a little bit about what they do…

Calderdale Smartmove provides a high quality, client-centred service that helps homeless and vulnerable people find accommodation in their local area.  

Chris Leonard, Senior Business Manager at The DPS said: “Calderdale SmartMove plays an important role in the local community by housing those in need and providing support and education to help people access employment…”

The donation will allow Calderdale Smartmove to provide security bonds that will help them secure accommodation for the people that need it most. 

Craig George, at Calderdale Smartmove, said: “For many people, finding long-term accommodation is extremely challenging, and by giving more individuals and families a helping hand, we can make sure more people have somewhere safe and comfortable to live.

“We’re really grateful to The DPS for the funding, and it’s great to work with organisations that share Calderdale Smartmove’s ethos.”

Bosco House – A warm and inviting home for single homeless men

Did you know that every three months £20,000 is up for grabs? Through the DPS Fund we donate to charities that do amazing work in a range of housing-related issues. 

We recently visited Bosco House, a successful applicant to our eighth round of awards to hand over a ‘big cheque’ (see the picture below).

Bosco society is a small charitable organisation which provides 23 bed spaces to single homeless men. Many of whom have a troubled background, such as misuse problems, mental health issues and other offences.

The £5,000 award will help with the opening of a new hostel in Sefton that will house 13 homeless young people.

James Heller, a Senior Worker at Bosco House, said: “We are extremely delighted and grateful to The DPS for the funding provided for our new hostel.  

“The funding provided will go a long way towards providing a safe and secure environment for our clients and will contribute to rebuilding lives and combating homelessness in Merseyside.”

LAMP – supporting young homeless people in the community

As you may have seen, every three months we award up to £20,000 to charities that focus their efforts on housing related issues. 

In our seventh round of awards, we had some really strong applications and every detail was scrutinised. We’re delighted to announce that Luton Accommodation and Move-on Project (LAMP) was one of the successful charities in England and Wales.   


LAMP is a small, local charity and for over 20 years they’ve provided accommodation and support to homeless young people aged between 16 and 25 in Luton, Bedford and the surrounding area. 

The £5,000 award will help provide privately rented accommodation for between eight and ten homeless young people. It will also help teach them basic household management and develop independent living skills.  

Our Head of Tenancy Deposit Protection, Daren King said: “LAMP is doing excellent work helping people find housing and teaching them the skills to live on their own.”

John Archer, Chief Executive Officer at LAMP, said: “LAMP is delighted to receive the support funding from The DPS.

“It will make a real difference to our operations and how we are able to provide safe accommodation to support young homeless people to encourage and enable them to build their self-confidence and move on to independent living.”

A helping hand for two charities doing great work

As you may have seen, over the last year we’ve awarded up to £20,000 every three months to charities that focus their efforts on housing related issues. 

For the sixth round of awards since we started our Charity Donations Fund, we’ve had some really strong applications, with every detail being considered. We’re delighted to say we have two successful applicants: Launchpad Reading and H3 (Helping the Homeless into Housing). Both of these fantastic charities will receive £10,000.

Launchpad Reading 

Launchpad Reading has a very simple, yet effective mission statement: We believe everyone in Reading deserves their own home and the opportunity to have a positive future. This is the foundation for all the great work they do in helping Reading’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged people turn their lives around and fulfil their potential. 

Launchpad had been unsuccessful in an earlier application, but this time round their application was much stronger – painting a vivid picture of why a donation was needed and how the money would be used. The review panel particularly liked the support they give people to become independent again, which goes beyond just rent and deposit guarantees.

A home is the foundation of all of our support and with the generous donation from the DPS Charity Fund we will together be making a home a reality for many more disadvantaged people in Reading and helping to prevent homelessness in the town.’  Ian Caren, Launchpad Reading CEO


H3 (Helping the Homeless into Housing) 

H3 works with those who’ve been homeless before, alongside other agencies, to help homeless people in their local community. It can be very difficult to find social housing for those homeless people who are not considered a priority. H3 gives homeless people the vital support they need to get them back into a life of independence. 

Their application was extremely detailed and clearly explained how their ‘Homefinder’ programme could help homeless people out of their situation. We believe this funding will go a long way to helping many more people over the years.

We have recently reached a project milestone by housing 100 people since the programme began and being awarded £10,000 from the DPS Charity Donations Fund is a fantastic boost as it will allow us to continue helping local people move into a place they can finally call home.”  Sheila Mason (H3 Trustee/Committee Member)

£10,000 donation supports charity’s work homing 142 people

Framework was among the first charities to benefit from our Charity Donations fund, receiving £10,000 in our second round of awards last year. Their application really brought to life the problems faced by the people they set out to help, so we were delighted to hear from Jon Leighton, support service manager at Framework, about how they’ve been putting our donation to use:

Framework exists to help homeless people live independently in homes of their own. We work hard to develop people to the point where they are ready to take this step, but often face huge challenges in getting people housed at the end of their time with us.  
That’s why I am so proud of our Smartmove service - a residential lettings agency that exists to find decent quality and affordable accommodation within the private sector for vulnerable people – because it gives vulnerable and excluded people a fighting chance in an increasingly challenging rental market. 
In September last year, we received a cheque for £10,000 from The DPS to continue this work – something I and the rest of the team are hugely grateful for. More importantly, this contribution has helped real people to move into real properties – people who would otherwise not be housed.
The reasons why are in many ways understandable.

Private landlords are often unwilling to welcome people with a history of homelessness and other associated problems. However, with the reassurance of Framework acting as a mediator and contributing towards the cost of a deposit, the service has been very successful in negotiating suitable living spaces for vulnerable people across Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire. In the last year, the service has housed over 142 people, with a suggested saving to society of more than £500,000 (according to “Making it count” value for money indicators by Crisis).
Mani, aged 48, was one of those real people we helped through Smartmove. Having fallen into mental ill health after a relationship breakdown, Mani’s life was very much at a point of crisis. I think his words sum up better than I ever could why Smartmove is so important, and why this donation is so welcomed.

“I was all over the place emotionally and physically and after two months’ sofa-surfing I was feeling really low and depressed. I approached Smartmove who, after an assessment, offered me a room in one of Framework’s accommodation services. After five months, my support worker approached me to say he was happy with my progress and offered me the chance of a little flat with a private landlord. The offer of a flat of my own was a lifeline to me. I had been everywhere asking for a tenancy, but was unsuccessful. Now I can’t believe how good things are going! I have independence and I have started applying for jobs.”

The incredibly generous funding that Smartmove has received from The DPS means that we are able to help many more people like Mani on their route away from homelessness and towards independence. I would like to thank The DPS again for supporting Framework and Smartmove in particular.

The Smartmove service has enabled us at Framework to create some very productive links with the private rented sector. With the continuing depletion of social housing these links become very important. Finding a safe, secure and affordable place for people to live is one of our number one priorities. And the help we’ve received so far from The DPS and Crisis has been instrumental in creating an innovative and responsive service for vulnerable people.

About Framework

Framework was formed in 2001 and provides housing, support, training, care, resettlement and employment services, opening doors for around 11,000 homeless and vulnerable people across the East Midlands and parts of South Yorkshire. These include rough sleepers, people escaping domestic violence, care leavers, former prisoners and members of the armed forces, and people with drug, alcohol and mental health problems.

A big boost for three housing charities in our first awards for 2015

As you may know, through our Charity Donations Fund we award up to £20,000 every three months to charities that focus their work in the housing sector. 

The first application window of this year closed at the end of March, and the applications have been thoroughly scrutinised. There were a number of strong applications, but we’ve made our decision. It gives us great pleasure to announce awards to three successful charities!

Colchester Emergency Night Shelter

Colchester Emergency Night Shelter (CENS) supports homeless adults in a range of ways, from CV writing to providing emergency accommodation. It often works with the most vulnerable of people, those with drug or alcohol problems, mental health issues or the long-term unemployed.

CENS did a great job of explaining how they would use the funds to set up a new Rent Deposit Guarantee scheme to fill a gap left by the closure of a similar scheme in the Colchester area. 

With a £10,000 award from our Charity Fund, CENS will help people who currently use the shelter to find and retain a long-term rented property. Throughout the first year of a new tenancy, CENS will guarantee rent payments, provide a conciliation service if things go wrong, and continue to support the tenant to become an active member of the community.


StopGap – Sheffield

The safety, security and respite that just two or three nights off the streets can provide is often enough to help people make positive steps towards longer-term housing arrangements. That’s the belief held by StopGap – a charity which covers the costs of short-term accommodation for homeless people in Sheffield. They did a great job of explaining this to us in their application, and will receive a £5,000 award as a result.

They will use the award funds to help them extend their reach, helping more people to escape the threats of violence, hunger, cold and wet weather, and the potential health problems that so often can make life a misery for homeless people. We particularly liked that everyone they work with must commit to working with a referral agency to ensure everything is being done to secure a longer-term solution.

CINTRE Community

CINTRE Community is founded on the belief that everyone should have the opportunity to live an independent lifestyle wherever possible. And we couldn’t agree more.

This application asked us to provide crucial funds for CINTRE Reachout South West – a service which helps people with a range of learning difficulties to live independently in their own homes. Key workers provide valuable support for things such as housing queries, managing money and acting as a responsible person or advocate, if needed.

Supportive communities are strong communities, so we’re delighted to award £5,000 to an initiative that is allowing people to develop and retain their independence in a supportive environment.

In September 2014 we donated £10,000 from our Charity Donations Fund to the charity Framework. 

Framework is dedicated to helping homeless people, preventing homelessness and helping those who are vulnerable find new direction and opportunities in their lives.

Our donation has allowed Framework to find accommodation for clients with very low incomes and very few housing options. One of their clients has already been able to move into a clean, affordable property, with fewer worries about finding the money to live. And even more people will be able to move in the coming months.

How is the Cheltenham Housing Aid Centre using our donation to help homeless people?

In September last year we donated £10,000 from our Charity Donations Fund to The Cheltenham Housing Aid Centre (CHAC). 

They are a small independent charity that gives free advice and information to the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in their community.  

We took the opportunity to catch-up with CHAC to see how our donation helped rehouse five people in the Cheltenham area. One of those was a local man who was living in his car after the breakdown of his relationship, leaving him depressed and desperate. Our funding has helped him find a flat. He can now have his kids over to stay and is looking forward to getting back into work.

Over the last year The DPS Charity Donations Fund has donated £80,000 to good causes and we’re proud to be able to support the vital work of charities such as CHAC.

We caught up with the 700 Club - see how they're using our donation!

The 700 Club were the final successful applicants of our first donation in May 2014 and received £7,500.

The 700 Club help homeless people in Darlington achieve independence. They provide accommodation and tenancy support for people with drug and alcohol problems. They also run “Bridge2Home” – a Bond Guarantee Scheme that helps clients’ access accommodation by underwriting the bond.

We were delighted to fund them because they’re a registered UK charity who improves the delivery of housing in the private rented sector.

We recently gave the 700 Club a call to find out how our donation has been used. They were eager to tell us our funding has provided vital support for their Bridge2Home project and helped hundreds of vulnerable people gain access to housing.

With our donation the Bridge2Home scheme is offered to more clients. Their bond guarantee has been increased from £150 to £400 so they can compensate landlords for higher risks! They also visit high-need clients more often giving landlords more protection when housing these clients. And clients have a home!

Previously the scheme had been cautious in underwriting bonds of clients with high needs because of the higher risk of damage to a landlord’s property. This increased risk also put landlords off accepting these people as tenants.

700 Club cheque handover

Find out how The Homesavers Charity has put our donation to good use!

The Homesavers Charity was another successful applicant to our Charity Donations Fund in 2014. In May they received £7,500.

The charity helps people in Merseyside who’re on low income, facing homelessness or living in temporary accommodation access private housing. They offer tenancy deposits and financial guarantees to private landlords, which help prospective tenants into affordable housing. They also distribute survival packs to homeless people.

We awarded them funding because they improve the availability of private sector housing and they will continue to provide benefits in the long term.

We recently caught up with The Homesavers Charity and found out that five people have benefited from our donation! One of those was a woman from Liverpool who was given 28 days to leave her property. They were able to pay the £475 deposit for a house so her son didn’t need to move schools. Our funding also helped to support her housing benefit application, and money will be put aside each month so she can pay her own deposit once her tenancy ends.

Our donation was also used to help an unemployed woman and her children find accommodation when they faced homelessness due to the breakdown of her relationship. Her new landlord demanded more rent in advance because she didn’t have a rental guarantor; however The Homesavers Charity were able to cover this deposit so they could move into their home.

Last year we launched our Charity Donations Fund and our first successful applicant was the Sanctuary Trust who received £5,000.

This charity offers a hostel to homeless men in Rochdale and also run STEP, a ten-bed emergency overnight shelter. They set up a project to support these men in beating substance misuse.

The application caught our eye because they wanted to offer personal development training and recreational activities to help them get back on their feet.

We recently asked Sanctuary Trust how our donation helped them. We were delighted to hear they have been able to provide training for thirteen of their residents, including basic living skills, life coaching and cooking on a budget. As a result of their cooking classes the men were able to bake a festive feast for the charity staff over Christmas.
